Wednesday to Sunday: open to all - 9 am - 4 pm
* Please note: Events, holidays, and school breaks may impact these hours. Additionally, CMTM offers professional, family-friendly theatre productions and afterschool experiences, which are ticketed separately from museum visits.

The Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine Afterschool Experiences are designed with the whole child in mind. From exploring the interconnection between Maine's aquatic species to creating a show as a theatre ensemble, these experiences foster collaboration, empathy, critical thinking, and self-awareness skills.

Playwriting Workshop Series: Workshop 6
How do you string together a beginning, middle and end to create a cohesive narrative? What is the hero’s journey, and how can we use dramatic structure for inspiration?
This drop-off workshop series meets weekly on Mondays from 3:45 pm - 5:15 pm for 8 weeks from February 26 to April 15. Participants can take one or all sessions.
Join us for the Science for Tots series! This is a weekly program designed for children ages 2-5 and their caregivers. Each week, experience a different activity based on the theme of the month. This month, we turn our eyes to the skies. Join us for hands-on space-themed activities, including exploring craters with rocks and playdough, painting new planets, and creating star constellation art. Registration Required.

On the first Thursday of each month, CMTM opens for a special mask-required session from 9 to 11 am in an effort to welcome immunocompromised families. These sessions typically include art and science programming. School groups may be part of this visit time, but students and teachers will be wearing masks.

The Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine announces an opportunity for budding playwrights aged 17 and under to submit their original plays to the upcoming Youth Play Festival on June 1 and 2, 2024. The festival, which kicks off the 101st children’s theatre season, aims to ignite a passion for theatre and nurture the imaginative talents of young writers.

Popular children’s author Mo Willems’ musical adaptation of his “Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale” premieres later this month at Maddy’s Theatre at the Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine.
The musical is about toddler Trixie and her dad and their trip to the laundromat, where Trixie loses her treasured stuffed animal, Knuffle Bunny.

The 2023 Regional Awards honor regional productions, touring shows, and more which had their first performance between October 1, 2022 through September 30, 2023. This year the BroadwayWorld Regional Awards were bigger and better than ever, including over 100 cities across America, Canada, Central and South America, Europe, and Asia.
The new playspace outside the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine in Portland, was a long time coming. Ckuwaponahkiyik Atkuhkakonol: Wabanaki Storytelling Through Art and Traditions is the 48-year-old institution’s first permanent exhibit dedicated to Maine’s indigenous people. “We’ve always told stories about this place we call Maine, but there has been a lack of Wabanaki voices,” says education and exhibits director Starr Kelly, who began developing the project soon after joining the museum staff two years ago.

Reporting to the Director of Education and Exhibits, the Exhibits Manager manages the exhibits team, overseeing exhibit remediation design and construction, handling all exhibit maintenance and cleaning operations, and managing future exhibit design and fabrication.
